Marketers love video for good reason: It engages, persuades, and sticks with people far better than text alone. In fact, research shows viewers retain 95% of a message when they watch it in a video, compared to just 10% when reading it in text.
That’s a huge opportunity, but only if your script is strong enough to deliver.
Let’s look at six mistakes that can weaken a script — and how you can sidestep them.
1. Not taking time to identify your audience.
Before you write a single word, know who you’re talking to. Define your audience and craft your script around their needs and interests.
2. Failing to hook your viewers.
The first few seconds matter most. Start with something unexpected, emotional, or visually compelling to grab attention right away.
3. Lacking a clear message in your script.
Every script needs one main takeaway. Ask yourself: What’s the single most important thing I want viewers to remember? Build your script around that.
4. Having poor structure.
A clear beginning–middle–end keeps your audience oriented. Guide them through your message without confusion or tangents.
5. Being overly wordy or complicated.
Keep it simple. Use conversational language and short sentences to make your message easy to follow out loud.
6. Forgetting a call to action.
Don’t leave viewers hanging. Wrap up with a clear next step, whether that’s subscribing, visiting your website, or making a purchase.
